Permeable Hardscape Designs
Friendly Solution for Walkways & Patios
Permeable hardscaping is designed to let rainwater sink into the ground rather than run-off into the storm drain. Every time it rains, water flows off of the impervious surfaces throughout our cities. Roofs, patios, sidewalks, and driveways all drain into the storm system. The water that flows off these surfaces carries pollutants that have built up in between rains. These pollutants cause serious harm to fragile marine and riparian ecosystems. Permeable patios, walkways, and driveways keep our waterways and the ocean cleaner by allowing rainwater to soak into the ground, where the soil acts as a natural filter.
Permeable Hardscape Benefits
– Reduce stormwater run-off to protect our ecosystems
– Permeable patios, walkways, and driveways allow rainwater to soak into the ground.
– Permeable flagstone pathways and patios provide a rustic, natural look
– Permeable pavers come in many shapes & styles
Thank You for Landscaping Responsibly!
Stormwater pollution is a serious threat to our local plants and wildlife. Every year in San Luis Obispo County, millions of gallons of stormwater run through our neighborhoods and out to streams, lakes, and the ocean. This stormwater is untreated and carries pollutants such as pesticides, fertilizers, animal waste, sediment, heavy metals, and oils. Part of the solution to this is to minimize impervious surfaces to allow that rainwater to permeate into the ground, where the pollutants are naturally broken down by soil microorganisms. Permeable patios, walkways, driveways, and other permeable hardscaping allow for this natural filtration process and help keep our environment greener!
